Emilia Ballester
Founder / Artistic Director
Emilia is a passionate dancer, teacher, choreographer and director who weaves her Mexican heritage into every movement she creates. From an early age, she found rhythm in Tap, later expanding her artistry to Jazz, Contemporary, Ballet, and Hip-Hop. Her pursuit of dance took her beyond borders, training at the Joffrey Ballet School in Miami before graduating from the Centennial College Dance Performance Program in Toronto in 2022. This journey ignited a deeper purpose—to diversify the dance landscape and inspire more Latinxs to embrace their artistic voice. Her stage experience spans from Mexico City to Toronto, performing in original musical theatre productions like La Fábrica de Santa, Dorian Gray El Musical, and La Bella Durmiente. In Canada, she has performed with Wavestage Productions in Parade and continues to bring stories to life through movement. As an educator, Emilia has spent a decade shaping dancers of all ages, instilling in them not just technique but the power of self-expression. Her choreographic career flourishes with credits including The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Jekyll & Hyde and debuting as a director in Women on The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown with Doctor Bird Productions, as well as work with Singing Out, Toronto’s largest 2LGBTQIA+ choir. In 2025, Emilia founded Tonalli with the vision of inspiring fellow Latinxs in their immigration journey while also offering Toronto a deeper connection to Mexican culture—inviting the city not just to witness it, but to be a part of it. She also envisioned Tonalli as a home for dancers seeking a place where they truly belong, a versatile company where they can explore both Contemporary and Musical Theatre, expanding their artistry without limitations. Beyond the stage, Emilia is also a photographer, forever chasing light, movement, and emotion through her lens. Above all, she is an artist—creating is not just what she does, it is who she is.
